The history of Institute began from 1980 when on the basis of the Republican Cardiological Clinic according to Decision of Healthcare Ministry of Ukrainian Soviet Republic the Branch of Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Cardiology named by Academician N.D. Strazhesko was opened and started to work. By the Order of Council of Ministry of Ukrainian Soviet Republic in connection with the great social importance of therapy, as a basic branch of medicalscience and practice the Branch of Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Cardiology was reorganized in the Kharkov Scientific Research Institute of Therapy, and in 1992 - in the Ukrainian Scientific Research Institute of Therapy.

The main tasks of Institute researching work are:

• development and practical introduction of the most significant and perspective methods of early diagnostic,

• studying of illnesses chronization factors and their prevention, the integrated prophylaxis and pathogenically reasonable treatment of inner organs diseases,

• formation of adequate techniques of the therapy management development.

From the time of the Academy of Medical Sciences was organized, the Institute concern to the system of Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

The founder and first director of the Institute was Academician Malaya L.T, Ukrainian National Academy of Science and Academy of Medical Science, Russian Academy of Medical Science. Since 2004 Institute named by Academician Malaya L.T.

Since 2003 the Director of Institute is Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor Babak.O.Ja, Honored worker of science and techniques of Ukraine, the Head of the republican problem Commission «Therapy», the President of the Ukrainian association of the World Society of Gastroenterology, Vice-President of Ukrainian Gastroenterologists Association, member of board of the Ukrainian Therapeutic Society presidium. In 2004 Babak.O.Ja. became the Laureate of the National competition the «Businessman of Ukraine», and in 2005 has been awarded the certificate of honor of the Supreme Pride of Ukraine.

Four hundreds and sixty-one persons work in the Institute, including 127 employees who provide research activity. The scientific potential of the Institute is comprised of 12 Doctors of Medical Sciences, 44 Candidates of Medical Sciences, 3 Candidates of Biological Sciences.

The structure of Institute constitutes of 11 research subdivisions which include departments of population researches, diseases of liver and gastrointestinal tract, atherosclerosis and ischemic heart diseases, acute myocardial infarction, nephrology, arterial hypertension, pulmonology, clinical pharmacology and pharmacotherapy, experimental and clinical morphology, scientific - organizational department, department of the scientific - medical information with library.

Main research results:

• Confirmed a conception of viral systemic damage of organs and tissues in virus hepatitis B based on investigation of the hepatitis B markers in the liver tissue, peripheral blood cells, and bone marrow; Different types of fibrosing reactions in the liver tissue in chronic viral hepatitis B were revealed; Identification of Helicobacter pylori by different methods was introduced into clinical practice; Non-invasive diagnostic methods of early forms of pre-cancer and cancer of stomach were introduced;

• Complex influence of small dozes of ionizing radiation in liquidators of Chernobyl Atom Electric Station on organism systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal etc.) was determined;

• The basic hemodynamic, neurohumoral and structural manifestations of the border arterial hypertension and factors of its progression on the population level were determined; Prognostic importance of dermogliphic lines complex for risk of development of hypertension was determined; It was established that interleukin-1 and interleukin-2 play a key role in the pathogenesis of hypertension; contribution of opiod peptides, chymase, neuropeptid B, leptin in development of different clinico-pathogenical forms of hypertension was revealed; On the base of quantum and efferent therapies non - medicamental methods of hypertension treatment were developed;

• Deep investigation of the cellular and humoral blood factors influence on the progressing and clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis and destabilization of ischemic heart disease started; Studying of immunoinflammatory and cytokine-dependent mechanisms of atherosclerosis progression and ischemic heart diseases started;

• Studying of chronization factors and development of new methods of early diagnostic, treatment and prophylaxis of the most widespread cardiovascular, respiratory, renal diseases and gastrointestinal tract diseases with introduction of the received results in clinical practice.

The results of investigations widely published. The product of collective work is 56 monographies and 1200 scientific and scientific - practical publications, 238 patents. The Institute published 2 professional editions: The Ukrainian Therapeutic Journal and Journal of Modern Gastroenterology. For 25 years in the Institute, a professional training of the top skills from therapy has been carried out. Since its existence, the Institute comprises of 27 Doctor's and 150 Candidate’s thesis, including 37 Candidates and 8 Doctors of Sciences for the different countries. The great contribution to the development of therapy in different years was brought by such well known scientists as: Vasyl’ev J.N., Volos B.E., Davydova L.I., Nicolenko E.Ya., Celyiko V.Yu., Yabluchanskiy N.I. etc.
