DEPARTMENT OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND
ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE

The Department of Atherosclerosis and Ischemic Heart Disease was created in 1981 year when the Kharkiv Branch of Kyiv’s Institute of cardiology named by N.D.Strazhesko had been organized. Since the moment of the formation (1981) its chief was Vladimir Volkov- Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science (2001), laureate of Strazhesko prize (1983) and Shatilov’s prize (1991), prize-winner of Presidium of Ukrainian Academy of Medical Sciences (1999, 2000), the member of European Society of Cardiologist, the member of the Working group on investigation of Atherosclerosis and Ischemic Heart Disease of Ukrainian Cardiological Association.

Professor Vladimir Volkov was the founder of a research school that made a great contribution to the investigation mechanisms of formation and evolution of atherosclerotic plaques, processes that leads to Atherotrombosis and manifestation of Ischemic Heart Disease.

The basic direction of scientific researches of the Department is studying of the role of endothelium-dependent, immunoinflammatory and platelet mechanisms of Atherosclerosis progression and realization of therapeutical effects, development of new methods of therapy of Ischemic Heart Disease.

Most important research results

• The role of vasoactive eicosanoids, others vasoactive substances (oxide nitrogen, endothelin, interleukins, factors of platelets adhesion etc.) in atherogenesis was studied.

• The significance of endothelium functional state, hemostasis activity in coronary Atherosclerosis progression was determined. It was proved, that the development of Ischemic Heart Disease is characterized by system endothelial dysfunction, elevation of platelet’s aggregation abilities. That is why determination of dynamic of vasoactive substances, hemostatic factors together dyslipidemia is most impotent way to control of drug therapy effect.

• The role of immunoinflammatory factors in pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases was ascertained . It was proved, that Ischemic Heart Disease is characterized by progressive disbalance between the activity of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines. The research of state of immunoinflammatory activity in patients with Ischemic Heart Disease and heart failure showed, that immunoinflammatory factors interconnect with left ventricular systolic dysfunction and neurohumoral activity.

In total 4 Doctor's and 30 Candidate’s theses were prepared and protected, 5 employees of the Department have headed independent scientific divisions of Institute of Therapy and other science and educational institutions.

Materials of science works are published in more than 400 scientific works, repeatedly reported on the International and National congresses and conferences, included in collective monographers, 11 methodical recommendations were published; 40 copyright certificates and patents were received on materials of science works.

The team of the Department was awarded premiums the USSR Academic of Medical Science N.D.Strazhesco, premiums in Science Medical Society named by V.P. Shatilova, silver medals of exhibition of the USSR and Ukraine, deeds of Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the premium of Presidium AMS of Ukraine (1999), the deed of Presidium National Academy Science of Ukraine (2000), Kharkiv Science Medical Society, the premium acad. V.V. Frol'kis (2001).

The clinical base of the Department is the Infarction Unit. The head of the Unit is Klimenko T.I.
